About Us

Devonport High School is currently widely acknowledged and respected for the following broad characteristics:

1. Pioneering the use of an Intranet as a means of teacher moderated “on-line” delivery. Our aim has been to maximize an intranet’s potential in the following areas: Individualised Curricula, richness of content, changing the Student-Teacher relationship, efficiency and flexibility of access to resources and student exposure to modes of independent learning. (Our inclusion in the Good Schools Network was recognition by outside reviewers of our early work and intentions in this field. Staff from the school have been invited to present aspects of our work in a wide range of forums both locally and interstate.

2. Consistent planning and application of all available resources to both physically provide and integrate information technology into the daily experience of students and; through persistent but sensitive provision of professional development, all teaching staff.

3. Sustained implementation of the broadest possible interpretation of an “open access” concept. This had not only included public use of the school building but, significantly, after hours, teacher supervised access for students, parents/other adults to our information technology centre and related resource centre. Additionally, school developed, internet based material has been provided for our students to provide 24 hours a day, all year round curriculum programs.

4. Academic excellence with extension of gifted and talented students together with strong emphasis on acquisition of basic literacy and numeracy skills for all.

5. Excellent socialisation skills and development of sensitivity through high order experiences in the related arts and our Supportive School Environment (Devonport High School has been accepted as one of the six “Refocusing Supportive School Environment” schools in the state).

6. Inclusive decision-making and relationship structures that embody the fundamental Principals of equity.

7. Successfully managing change!

As we embark on our School Improvement Review this year we must be mindful of the balance that needs to be achieved between the competing forces for change. The School’s Affirmation captures the spirit of our challenge: “Devonport High School has served this community for the majority of the 20th Century and pledges to uphold this fine tradition while pursuing excellence in meeting the challenge of the new millennium.”
